Magcam Portal/Combi Scanner

The Magcam Portal Scanner is a fast 3-axis motorized scanner or mapper with an integrated MiniCube1D or MiniCube3D magnetic field camera. It uses an image stitching algorithm to measure large areas at high speed. The Portal Scanner allows to measure large magnets and magnet assemblies and is controlled automatically by the MagScope measurement & analysis software.

It is possible to combine a Portal and Rotor Scanner in one. The Rotor Scan Extension converts the Portal Scanner into a Combi scanner by adding a rotary stage for measuring the magnetic field distribution of permanent magnet rotors and curved magnet segments.

Portal Scanner + Rotor Scan Extension = Combi Scanner

In order to convert the Magcam Scanner to Rotor Scan mode, the rotary stage is mounted on the sample plate of the Scanner and the MiniCube Magnetic Field Camera is rotated over 90°. This add-on eliminates the need for a separate Magcam Rotor Scanner for measuring PM rotors.

Hardware features

  • XYZ scan range: 290mm x 290mm x 250mm
  • Integrated MiniCube1D or MiniCube3D magnetic field camera
  • Mapping speed: 120mm²/s (full resolution)
  • Dimensions (WxDxH): 780mm x 1000mm x 1900/2200mm (with Z axis at minimum/maximum position)
  • Unidirectional repeatability per axis: +/- 1.3um
  • Integrated calibrated positioning frame for accurately positioning magnets in a reproducible way
  • Collision detection
  • Fully integrated stylish stand-alone housing on wheels
  • Integrated side table
  • Optional extension to 4-axis Combi version for Rotor Scanning
  • Optional high accuracy laser sensor for automated sample size measurement

Rotor Scan Extension features

  • Removable motorized rotary stage with clamping chuck
  • Additional motor controller terminal and motor cable added to the PLC (no extra space required)
  • Easy swapping between XYZ scanning and Rotor scanning
  • Rotor diameter range: 0 - 300mm - Axial range: 0 - 250mm (Z axis range), with 5 dowel pinned offset positions separated 60mm each, increasing the total axial range to 550mm
  • PLC with 3-axis servo motor motor controller - Scanner plugin for MagSope software
  • Scan speed: up to 12.7mm axial length in 2 seconds (with 0.1mm axial resolution, 1° angular resolution)

Software features

  • The scan stage is controlled automatically by the MagScope Measurement and Analysis software.
  • Automated scanning and image stitching
  • The stitched large area images can be analyzed in the same way as individual camera images.

Applications

  • Large magnets (flat side measurements)
  • Halbach array assembly measurements
  • Magnet plate assembly inspection
  • Batch measurement of magnet trays

Portal Scanner introduction

The Portal Scanner is controlled by the MagScope measurement & analysis software, together with several plug-ins.

The Magcam Portal Scanner is a motorized mechanical X-Y-Z stage with an integrated magnetic field camera for magnetic field mapping of larger permanent magnets and magnet assemblies.

The Portal Scanner is controlled by the MagScope measurement & analysis software, together with several plug-ins. The scanner uses a Beckhoff PLC controller to control the 3 axis.

The controller can be initialized in two ways:

  • Creating a new Scanner Action on a network in MagScope
  • Loading a saved network (‘preset’)

To create a new network, select ‘Configure Actions’ from the network context menu.

Image stitching

The stitcher function in MagScope combines multiple frames or channels into a single image. This way it is possible to stitch multiple measurements from a single camera or measurements from multiple cameras in a single image.

The stitcher function in MagScope combines multiple frames or channels into a single image. This way it is possible to stitch multiple measurements from a single camera or measurements from multiple cameras in a single image. During creation you first need to configure the total image dimensions in the ‘Data Stitcher’ dialog. Here you configure the number of images to combine and the dimensions of the combined image.

Next you will need to configure the location of each image in the total stitched image in the ‘Stitcher’ window.

Portal Scanner Applications

2-pole rotary encoder magnet image

2-Pole Rotary Encoder Magnets

For this application the in-plane Bxy field component is important and can be measured with the Magcam MiniCube3D camera.

Multipole Rotary Encoder Magnets

It is important in this application to measure and analyze if the zero crossings and pole peaks are equal.

Linear Encoder magnet.jpg

Linear encoder strip magnets

The detection of the pole peaks and zero crossings as well as the Fourier harmonics analysis is important in this application.

Combi Scanner Applications

Permanent Magnet Rotors

Both small electric rotors for e.g. servo steering and larger rotors for e.g. electric vehicle (EV) drives are measured with Magcam’s Rotor or Combi Scanner.

Crack Detection

The MagFit module integrated in the MagScope software can filter out the signature of cracks from the background field distribution and automatically detect cracks.
